5 Ways to beat the Pandemic Blues at Home
Most of us have a long bucket list of dreams designed for our future selves and we keep procrastinating on those goals thinking we’d accomplish them when the time is right. Well, what better time than now? Here is a suggested list of 5 ways to use the lockdown to your advantage.
- Exercise the blues away
With all this new found free time, you finally have the opportunity to go hard at those fitness goals you had set for yourself at the beginning of the year. Though gyms are restricted, there are many home workout options available for which you don’t need any equipment or weights. These are simple body weight workouts and are proven to be very effective while reducing the likelihood of injury. Follow fitness bloggers such as Kayla Itsines, Aaron Nimmo who post a lot of free workout programs as well as have paid personalised fitness programs catered to your goals. There are Apps as well with curated home workouts such as Freeletics and Centr.
- Learn a new language
One of the best ways to build connections with people is being able to speak with them in their own language. Knowing a language opens up doors not just socially but does wonders to your career aspirations as well. The demand for bi-lingual jobs has increased exponentially over the last few years and who knows this could just be your ticket to moving to that dream destination a few years down the line. There are several language apps such as Duolingo and Babbel where you can learn a new language at your own speed and time.
- Meditation
During the pandemic, each of us are being stretched to the maximum and dealing with challenges across different facets of our lives. With these challenges, it is easy to let daily stressors spiral into overthinking and anxiety and/or rumination. This is even more exacerbated when faced with periods of isolation that comes with social distancing. Meditation is extremely beneficial as it helps you stay present and be completely in the moment through breathing and visualization techniques. It is also beneficial to improving the quality of your sleep. There are different apps for meditation such as Calm and Headspace.
- Play a new instrument
Ever wanted to learn a new instrument like the guitar, drums or the keyboard but feel that it’s too late? A surprisingly large number of people take to playing an instrument in their 20’s, 30s, 40’s even. Learning a new instrument not only helps you relax and unwind but also builds your cognitive problem solving abilities and gives you a sense of achievement. Music helps you expand your social circle as well as joining a musical group, choir or band encourages you to develop new relationships with people. I’ve recently been teaching myself the guitar through Andy Guitar’s Youtube page.
